Caribbean Slave Owners is, as the title suggests, concerned with some of the lesser-known histories of County Mayo. The twenty histories explore wide-ranging, but in many cases, closely interrelated themes, including colonialism, slavery, abuse of power, religious persecution, famine, military and police killings of civilians, the emergence of a free press in Mayo, and Mayo’s position in the wider Atlantic Basin world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Other subjects examined include the politicisation of commemoration and remembrance, commemoration without historical context and the appropriateness of memorialising those who helped further the ideals of, and benefited from, the expansion of the British Empire.
